How is oak wood air-dried?

Air-drying oak means allowing the wood to dry slowly at a sheltered outdoor location, where air circulation gradually draws out the moisture. This process takes an average of one year per five centimetres of thickness, which for heavy oak timber quickly adds up to five to ten years or more. The result is a material that barely moves and is suitable for the most demanding applications.

Below, we answer the most frequently asked questions about drying oak, from ideal conditions to what you should check when purchasing.

How long does it take to air-dry oak?

The rule of thumb is one year of drying time per five centimetres of wood thickness. A piece measuring 20 by 20 centimetres will therefore need around four years. Heavy structural timber of 30 centimetres or more can require ten years or longer before it is stable enough for demanding projects. Going faster is not possible without compromising quality.

This is not an arbitrary guideline. Oak is a dense hardwood with a slow rate of moisture release. The outer layers dry faster than the core, and if that difference becomes too great, internal stresses develop that lead to cracking or warping. Patience here is not a luxury — it is a technical requirement.

What are the ideal conditions for air-drying oak?

The ideal conditions for air-drying oak combine good air circulation, protection from direct rain and sunlight, and stacked storage with space between individual pieces. The location should allow moisture to pass through freely, without the wood resting directly on the ground.

In practical terms, this means:

The ends are the most vulnerable part. Many timber handlers protect them with a coating or paint to limit cracking. This is not mandatory, but it helps with very thick pieces.

What is the difference between air-dried and kiln-dried oak?

The difference lies in the drying method and the end result. Air-dried wood dries slowly in the open air and reaches a moisture content of approximately 15 to 18 percent. Kiln-dried wood is dried in a controlled oven to 8 to 12 percent moisture content, in a fraction of the time.

That might suggest kiln-dried wood is drier, and therefore better. But that is an oversimplification. Wood that has been rapidly dried in a kiln builds up internal stresses that can cause movement, cracking, or distortion once it returns to a normal environment. Air-dried wood never develops those stresses, because the process was gradual enough for the fibres to adapt.

For interior use in a heated environment, kiln-dried wood can be a logical choice in some cases, since its moisture content is closer to the equilibrium of a heated space. For heavy construction, restoration, and heritage projects, air-dried wood is in most cases the better option, as the material retains its character and does not continue to move. Why is air-dried oak more stable than kiln-dried wood?

Air-dried oak is more stable because the cellular structure of the wood remains intact during the slow drying process. The fibres shrink gradually and evenly, without internal stress. In kiln-drying, the wood is dried at high temperature in a short period of time, which puts strain on the cell walls and leaves behind microscopic tensions.

Those tensions are not always visible at the time of purchase, but they can manifest later. A piece that looks perfect in the warehouse may start to move, crack, or slightly distort after being installed in a heated space. With air-dried wood, that risk is considerably lower, because the wood has already reached its equilibrium.

There is also a practical argument. Air-dried oak has a moisture content close to the equilibrium of an average indoor environment. Less adjustment is needed after installation, which reduces the likelihood of problems. For architects and contractors, that is a relevant consideration — especially for exposed work or structures with tight tolerances. What applications is air-dried oak best suited for?

Air-dried oak is best suited for projects where dimensional stability, the visual appearance of the wood, or historical authenticity are important factors. Think of heavy roof structures, restoration projects, interior finishing, cladding, and monumental applications where the wood must remain in place for decades. This also applies to antique oak boards — for flooring, wall cladding, or roof boarding — where air-dried material is preferable to rapidly dried wood.

The best choice always depends on the specific situation. Factors to consider include:

  1. Structural load: The heavier the load the timber must bear, the more important the stability of air-dried material becomes.
  2. Visibility: In exposed work, you want to avoid cracking or distortion after installation.
  3. Historical context: When restoring listed buildings, air-dried antique oak is a closer match to the original material.
  4. Environmental climate: In heavily heated or climate-controlled spaces, additional acclimatisation may be required regardless of the drying method.
  5. Lead time: Air-dried wood is not always immediately available in the right dimensions. A large stock, such as the one we maintain, makes all the difference.

For projects where speed is the overriding priority and the wood will not be visible, kiln-dried wood can be a pragmatic choice. But for everything where the material itself plays a role in the final result, air-dried oak is in most cases the better option.

How do you recognise genuinely air-dried oak when buying?

Genuinely air-dried oak can be identified by a combination of visual characteristics and measurable values. The colour is a deeper, more even grey or brown than freshly dried wood, the ends show fine, stable checks, and a moisture meter will read between 15 and 18 percent. Sellers who cannot provide a moisture content reading deserve extra scrutiny.

Practical checks when purchasing:

With antique oak, provenance is also a telling indicator. Timber salvaged from demolished historic buildings has in many cases had decades to fully stabilise. That puts it in an entirely different category from freshly sawn wood that has simply been stored outdoors for a few years.
