When selecting oak for a restoration project, you consider the drying method, dimensions, wood grain, and origin. Antique oak that has been air-dried and has a verifiable history is, in most cases, best suited for historical restorations. How you make that choice depends on the specific project. For structural oak timber in a restoration project, cross-section, length, straightness, and wood grain are the four decisive characteristics. For structural applications, the general rule is that the timber must have sufficient load-bearing capacity for the intended load, which has direct implications for minimum dimensions. Quality also concerns what you cannot see: internal cracks, wood rot, or insect damage.
Oak that has been stored outdoors for a long time or salvaged from old structures often has a dense annual ring pattern. This is a sign of slow growth and therefore greater density and strength. When selecting timber, look for the following:
Surface checks along the grain are normal in antique oak and in most cases do not affect load-bearing capacity. They are part of the material. What matters is the structural integrity of the core.
Air-dried oak dries naturally outdoors over a period of years, gradually and evenly releasing its moisture content. Kiln-dried timber goes through this process in an oven or drying chamber in a fraction of the time. The difference lies not only in the method, but in how the timber behaves afterward.
With air-dried oak, the timber has had time to stabilize internally. Internal stresses are released gradually. The result is a piece of timber that moves or warps very little after installation — exactly what is needed in a restoration project, where existing structures leave little room for movement or adjustment.
Kiln-dried timber reaches a comparable moisture content, but its internal stress pattern is different. After installation in a new environment, the timber may still move, particularly in large cross-sections. For smaller dimensions or interior cladding, this is less of a concern. For heavy structural elements in a historic building, air-dried timber with a drying period of several years is in most cases the better choice.
Oak suitable for historical restoration is identified by the combination of verifiable age, matching wood grain, and a patina that corresponds to the existing material in the building. It is not just about old wood — it is about wood that matches the period, the use, and the construction method of the original.

Ask your supplier about this in advance so you are not caught off guard mid-project. A supplier who keeps thorough records of their stock can provide this information quickly.
Custom cutting makes sense when the dimensions you need differ from what is available in stock, or when the application requires a specific surface finish that is not available as standard. The decision depends on the tolerances the project allows and the lead time available.
Standard stock sizes are in most cases available more quickly and are slightly less expensive. If the difference between the stock size and the required size is small and the application permits it, that is often the practical choice. In a restoration project, however, requirements can be more demanding: a specific width for a historic roof structure, a specific thickness for a floor board element that must align with existing timber.
In that case, custom cutting is the logical step. Reclaimed oak beams from stock can be sawn to size, brushed, sandblasted, or weathered. This way, the material is adapted to the project — not the project to the material. Allow for a longer lead time and discuss this early in the project planning process.
