Green oak is freshly sawn timber with a high moisture content. It is heavier, harder to work with, and continues to move significantly after installation. Oak suitable for exposed use can be identified by a consistent sawn structure, a tight grain, few or no large open cracks at the surface, and a dry feel. Beams with significant damage, large knots in visible positions, or a heavily uneven cross-section are less suitable for prominent exposed use — unless that is precisely the look you are after.
Oak with some age always carries traces of its past. That is not a defect, but it does require a deliberate selection process. With antique oak, the question is which marks enrich the space and which ones distract. A knot on the side of a beam can be beautiful. A large void on the underside, hanging directly in the line of sight, is less often desirable.
Practically speaking: let the position of the timber in the structure guide your selection. A ridge beam that sits high and central demands a different quality than a purlin that is barely noticeable from the side. This distinction also allows you to purchase more efficiently without compromising on appearance.
Oak can be processed in various ways for exposed applications. The most commonly used treatments are precision sawing, planing, brushing, sandblasting, and graying. Each treatment gives the wood a different character — from smooth and clean to rough and weathered.

When delivering long oak for roofing projects, four points are critical: site accessibility for heavy transport, on-site crane capacity, storage on the building site, and planning in relation to the construction schedule. A beam of 8 meters or more requires a long-bed vehicle and assumes the availability of a loader crane or telescopic handler on site.
What regularly goes wrong in practice: beams are delivered too early and sit exposed to rain for weeks, or they are ordered too late and delay the installation. Long oak intended for exposed use deserves particular attention when it comes to storage. It must be stored level, supported at multiple points, and preferably kept under cover to prevent moisture absorption.
When placing your order, also check whether the supplier can deliver exact lengths from their current stock. For beams over 7 meters, availability is more limited. Checking this early in the project avoids delays and means you won’t have to compromise on the dimensions you need. The decision to use antique oak rather than new oak depends on the desired character, stability requirements, and the context of the project. Antique oak is the better choice in most cases when the timber will remain visible, when the project calls for a historic or authentic feel, or when maximum dimensional stability is required. New oak is a logical option for structures that will be fully clad.
Oak that is 100 years old or more has a density and stability that freshly sawn timber does not possess. The growth rings in old oak are tighter, the cell structure is more compact, and the wood has largely finished shrinking and moving. These are not aesthetic arguments — they are technical ones.
At the same time, there is the history of the material itself. A beam that was once part of a barn, a mill, or a historic building carries that in its surface. That cannot be manufactured. For projects where the client wants something that does not come from a catalog, antique oak beams are the most natural choice.
New oak has its own qualities, but for exposed roof structures where appearance, longevity, and character all come together, the majority of architects and contractors opt for antique material. Not out of sentimentality, but as a professional judgment.
