In practice, a good supplier distinguishes itself through transparency. Are the beams measured and documented? Are dimensions and timber species available on request? Can the supplier show reference projects comparable to yours? Those are the questions that matter. A supplier who can present completed projects gives you, as an architect, a more realistic picture of what to expect than a catalog filled with stock photos.
The professionalism of the process also counts. How quickly does the supplier respond? Do they understand the context of a construction project, including the time pressure and the responsibility you carry as an architect toward your client? If you want to get a sense of the range and working methods, you can also plan a visit to the timber yard.
You assess the quality of reclaimed oak beams based on moisture content, wood structure, the presence of cracks or weak spots, and the degree of drying. Oak that has dried naturally for many years shows a denser structure and is more stable than freshly sawn or kiln-dried timber.

With air-dried oak, time has done its work. Oak that has dried outdoors for five years or more has developed a natural patina and has stabilized internally. This makes it suitable for demanding applications, such as large spans, exposed structural elements, or high-end interiors.
Kiln-dried timber is available more quickly and can be a good choice in certain situations, particularly for standard dimensions and less critical applications. But for projects where dimensional accuracy, long-term stability, and appearance carry significant weight, air-dried oak is in most cases the better option.
The choice depends on your application, the project requirements, and the timeline. Always ask your supplier explicitly about the drying method and drying time. Air-dried oak beams are not always available as standard, but with a supplier who maintains a large, well-managed stock, they are.
A supplier has sufficient stock for your project if they can deliver the required dimensions, timber species, and quantities directly from stock — without you depending on future purchases or fluctuating availability. Always ask for a concrete stock specification, not a general promise.
