Oak planks have an active woodworm infestation when you see fresh, light-colored bore holes with a diameter of one to three millimeters, often accompanied by fine, powdery dust — also known as frass. Old, dark holes without any powder typically indicate a past infestation that has long since become inactive.

The most common species to infest oak planks is the common furniture beetle, the larva of Anobium punctatum. In addition, oak — particularly the softer sapwood on the outer part of a beam or plank — can be attacked by the house longhorn beetle and, in rarer cases, by wood wasps.
The heartwood of oak, the dark, dense inner portion, is naturally rich in tannins. These tannins make it unattractive and difficult to digest for most woodworm species. Vulnerability lies almost exclusively in the sapwood: the lighter outer section that contains fewer tannins and has a softer structure.
In old oak planks, the sapwood has often already been largely removed through earlier processing or wear, which further reduces the likelihood of an active infestation. This is one of the reasons why well-dried antique oak causes fewer problems in practice than freshly sawn material.

A woodworm treatment is correctly applied to oak planks by first cleaning the wood, then applying the product generously and in multiple coats by brushing or spraying, and allowing sufficient time for it to penetrate before further processing or finishing the plank.

Please note: an existing finish such as oil or lacquer already on the wood will significantly hinder the penetration of the treatment product. With finished or oiled wood, it may be necessary to remove the existing finish first.
An oak plank with woodworm is usable in most cases, as long as its structural integrity remains intact. Surface holes and even extensive infestation in the sapwood do not necessarily affect the load-bearing capacity or stability of the heartwood. The assessment depends on the intended application.
For structural use, it is advisable to test the plank for firmness: press a bradawl or sharp object into the affected areas. If the wood immediately collapses or crumbles, the damage is too severe for structural use. If the heartwood feels hard and intact, the plank is in many cases still perfectly suitable.
For decorative applications — such as wall cladding, furniture, or flooring — holes and historical infestation are part of the character of the material. A piece of oak that is a hundred years old carries that history visibly. That is not a defect; that is patina.

After treatment, woodworm can be prevented by storing or using the oak in conditions that are dry, well-ventilated, and preferably above fifteen degrees Celsius. Moisture is the primary driver of reinfection: larvae of the common furniture beetle cannot survive in wood with a moisture content below twelve percent.
