Joris Verstrepen is a Belgian designer, born in West Flanders, and the founder of his eponymous label Verstrepen.studio. He is part of a rising generation of designers whose creative approaches are redefining the essence of design practice. Beyond his personal design philosophy, Verstrepen actively challenges conventional ideas within the field. His design ideology is grounded in four key pillars: nature, imperfection, craftsmanship, and sensory experience. From this foundation, he explores various creative disciplines, including textiles, ceramics, and object design. For this new collection, Verstrepen has chosen to work with well seasoned oak live edge planks.
In an era where the linear principles of Western culture and traditional economic models are losing relevance, Verstrepen’s work engages deeply with the act and significance of creation. His design journey moves beyond aesthetics, delving into the essence of our evolving world and the profound transformations taking place within it.
The new collection, “Chapter 2”, builds upon the foundations outlined in Verstrepen’s design manifesto. While the first collection showcased natural materials framed in diamond-inspired aluminum structures, this second series draws inspiration from image aspect ratios used in photography. Common formats from film and photography (such as 16:9, 4:5, 3:4, …) serve as a conceptual framework to capture and honor the fleeting beauty of nature.
