In the heart of the English countryside, an impressive new estate is rising, Park House Ramsbury, designed by renowned architect Francis Terry. The project includes a classic English mansion, various outbuildings, and 780 hectares of land in Ramsbury (Marlborough, England). A place of allure, tradition, long history, and a deep appreciation for authentic natural materials.
For this prestigious project, client Stefan Persson, founder and chairman of the Swedish fashion empire H&M, resolutely chose quality and craftsmanship. Together with his wife, he wanted to create a true family home: a timeless building where everything is perfect – down to the smallest detail. An important part of their wish? The use of as many original, historical materials as possible, including reclaimed oak beams, reclaimed oak planks, and air-dried oak beams with an authentic patina. Exactly the kind of historical ‘reclaimed’ wood we specialize in.
In the United Kingdom, such lengths of old oak beams were simply not to be found. The desired quantities of old oak planks for floors, wall cladding, and roof boarding were also not available anywhere. Eventually, they came to Frank Pouwer Historical Building Materials, the specialist in Europe for historical wood, also with large stocks of air-dried oak beams.
Thanks to our unique collection, we were able to deliver directly from stock – even beams with a natural drying time of more than five years. This long drying time ensures a beautiful patina and makes the wood extremely stable and durable. Exactly what architect Francis Perry had in mind.
For the processing of the wood, the British Five Oak Projects led by Oliver Guthrie was enlisted. Everything was crafted traditionally: with classic joints, without nails or screws. Guthrie called it “the most beautiful wood he has ever worked with in his career”. The project was a great opportunity to gain even more knowledge about old woodworking methods.
We are proud of our contribution to this unique project, on which more than 200 people have been working for over three years now. A project built to last for centuries – with wood that brings its own history. English mansions and estates have a long history and tradition, which will continue in a slightly modernized form for a long time to come. This is how our wood lives on in the stories of tomorrow. Although the clients value complete privacy and no photos of the exterior may be shared, we were given the honorable permission to take and publish detailed photos of the wood constructions. They explicitly conveyed their thanks, a sign of their satisfaction and their appreciation for the quality of our wood. We, of course, thank them back for this beautiful assignment.
