The shed built in 1931 is located on the Nieuwe Maas River and originally served to build large turbo generators.
The building in Ridderkerk is popularly known as the “generator factory.
This striking building is constructed of a steel frame filled with yellow bricks and has a large pitched roof finished on the inside with old wooden planks, or old roof boarding boards
Wood roof boarding boards were machine-machined at the time, which made installation relatively easy. In addition, softwood is relatively light, about 500 kg per m3, which is advantageous for the long spans of the roof structure.
In addition, wood offers excellent acoustic properties. In large factory halls, noise can be very loud due to the many machines. Wooden roof boarding dampens the noise, providing a better working environment.
Wood roofing boards used to be widely used in industrial buildings because of several advantages. An important economic argument is that about 100 years ago, wood was priced low because demand was much lower. By comparison, the Netherlands then had about 8 million inhabitants, while today that number has more than doubled. For an industrial plant, cost was crucial, and wood offered an affordable solution.
Several years ago, the city council decided to breathe new life into the dilapidated shed. The factory, which stood empty for years after closing, has since been converted into 26 homes and designated as a monument. During the renovation, the architects chose to remove the wooden roof boarding, making this batch of old boards available on the market.
Thanks to a tip, we came in contact with the buyer of these old boards. This batch is now available and in dry storage in our halls. These are relatively thick boards of about 2.5 cm with widths of 11.5 and 16.5 cm. In total, the lot covers more than 500 m2.
