What are the technical specifications of air-dried oak wood for large spans?

Air-dried oak is suitable for structural use when the timber has dried naturally for at least three to five years, has reached a moisture content below 18 percent, and comes from material with a verifiable origin and a stable core. For large spans, the combination of drying time, cross-section, and timber grade is decisive — not any single factor on its own. This article answers the most frequently asked technical questions about air-dried oak as structural timber for demanding projects.

What drying time is required for structurally stable air-dried oak?

For structural use of air-dried oak, a natural drying time of three years is the minimum. In practice, particularly for large spans or projects with high stability requirements, a drying time of five years or more is the norm. Only after this period is the moisture content stable enough to control shrinkage and movement after installation.

Oak is a dense species that dries slowly. Kiln drying can accelerate this process, but with thick cross-sections it frequently causes internal stresses and cracking. With air drying, where air circulation gradually draws out the moisture, the timber has time to stabilize its fibers. The result is structural timber that is dimensionally reliable and moves very little once installed.

What are the maximum spans for antique air-dried oak?

The maximum span of air-dried oak depends on the cross-section, the load, the supporting structure, and the timber grade. As a rough guideline, oak structural timber with a cross-section of 20 × 20 cm can be used for a simple span of up to approximately four to five meters without additional support. With larger cross-sections or combined structures, spans of eight to twelve meters are achievable.

For spans exceeding six meters, a structural engineer’s calculation is always required. The timber itself may be capable of spanning the distance, but the connections, the bearing points, and the interaction with the rest of the structure are at least equally important. Oak has a naturally high compressive strength and bending stiffness, making it particularly well suited for load-bearing applications — but this does not exempt anyone from the requirement to carry out structural calculations.

On the Park House Ramsbury project in England, designed by architect Francis Terry, we supplied air-dried oak structural pieces of more than ten meters directly from stock. Lengths like these are not standard, but they exist and are structurally usable when correctly dimensioned.

What timber grades apply to reclaimed structural timber?

Reclaimed structural timber in the Netherlands is subject to the European standard NEN-EN 1912 and the associated visual strength grading rules. For oak, visual grading to class D30 or higher is possible, depending on the presence of characteristics such as cracks, knots, resin pockets, and the straightness of the grain.

In practice, things are more nuanced than the standard might suggest. Antique oak has a different structure than freshly sawn timber due to its age. Cracks that would be considered a quality defect in new timber are often superficial and stable in old oak, as the wood has already dried out completely. This makes the visual grading of reclaimed timber a discipline in its own right, where experience and knowledge of the material are decisive. For projects where a structural engineer or contractor requires a formally certified timber grade, it is advisable to discuss this early in the process. Not every piece of reclaimed oak can be certified, but for many applications a well-founded visual assessment is sufficient as a basis for structural calculations.

How do patina and age affect the strength of air-dried oak?

Age does not diminish the strength of oak. On the contrary: oak that is a hundred years old or more is often harder and denser at its core than freshly sawn material, as the wood cells have fully mineralized and all moisture has long since escaped. The patina — the grey or brown outer layer formed by oxidation — is superficial and has no effect on the structural core.

What age does bring is greater stability. Structural timber that has stood for two centuries without moving or cracking will show virtually no surprises in a new structure. This is precisely what makes antique air-dried oak so attractive for demanding projects: it has long since left its instability behind.

What is important, however, is to check for damage caused by insects or fungi. Superficial bore tracks from longhorn beetles or woodworm are common in old oak and rarely structurally significant, but deeper damage in the core must be ruled out. A thorough visual inspection and, where necessary, a core bore will provide clarity on this.

What dimensions are available for air-dried oak from stock?

From our yard, air-dried oak is available in lengths of up to twelve meters and more, with cross-sections ranging from 12 × 12 cm to 30 × 30 cm and larger. Exact availability varies, as every piece is unique and stock changes constantly. Whether air-dried oak is the better choice over new structural timber depends on the project, the requirements, and the context. There is no absolute answer, but there are situations where antique air-dried oak is clearly the logical direction.

Air-dried oak is a strong choice in most cases when:

  1. The project requires visible structural timber with character and a historic appearance.
  2. The structure has high stability requirements and shrinkage or movement after installation is undesirable.
  3. Large lengths or heavy material are needed that are difficult to source in new timber.
  4. Sustainability is a project goal — both in terms of material use and service life.
  5. The project has a monumental, historic, or architecturally ambitious character.

New structural timber is generally less expensive to purchase and easier to certify. For concealed structures with no aesthetic requirements, it is often the most practical choice.
