Air-dried oak beams are antique oak beams that have dried naturally outdoors for many years, sheltered from rain but fully exposed to wind and air circulation. This process allows for a gradual, even release of moisture that artificial drying methods simply cannot replicate. Kiln-dried timber reaches a lower moisture content more quickly, but air-dried timber has less internal stress and behaves more consistently over time.

Kiln-dried timber is not inherently inferior. For certain applications, such as fine joinery or interior door casings, it is a perfectly logical choice. But for heavy structural beams and reclaimed antique timber, a different set of considerations applies.
