What is the difference between a load-bearing and non-load-bearing oak beam?

A structural oak beam absorbs forces and transfers them to the construction. A non-structural oak beam serves an aesthetic or dividing function, without carrying any structural load. The difference does not always lie in the wood itself, but in the application and the requirements the structural engineer places on the material. Below, we answer the most frequently asked questions about this distinction, so that as an architect or contractor you know exactly what to look for.

What requirements does a structural engineer place on a load-bearing oak beam?

A structural engineer places requirements on strength class, dimensions, moisture content, and documentation for a load-bearing oak beam. In the Netherlands, work is carried out in accordance with Eurocode 5, under which timber is classified into strength classes such as C24 or D30. Oak is generally assigned class D30 or higher, depending on its origin and grading process.

With antique oak timber, drying time plays an additional role. Oak that has been air-dried for many years has a moisture content already close to equilibrium with its environment. This makes the material more stable than freshly sawn timber and reduces the risk of movement or cracking after installation. Air-dried oak beams are for this reason particularly well suited to structural applications where dimensional stability and long-term reliability are essential.

How can you identify a load-bearing beam from the wood itself?

You cannot always tell from the wood itself whether a beam has previously served a structural function. What you can assess is the quality and condition of the material. Wide annual rings indicate slow growth and dense, strong timber. A straight grain, few large knots, and the absence of active cracks are positive indicators of structural suitability.

Antique oak beams sometimes bear visible traces of earlier structural use: mortise-and-tenon joints, notches for purlins, or marks from a roof truss. These are signs that the timber has already been subjected to structural loads and has withstood them.

Even so, visual assessment alone is insufficient for structural use. A formal grading or inspection remains necessary if the timber is to be used structurally again. The appearance of an old beam speaks to its character, not automatically to its load-bearing capacity.

What are the most common applications for non-structural oak beams?

Non-structural oak beams are most commonly used as exposed beams in an interior, as wall decoration, as a lintel above a fireplace, or as a dividing element within a space. The beam does not support a floor or roof here, but gives the space structure, warmth, and character.

Popular applications include:

  1. Exposed beams in living rooms and kitchens, painted or stained or left natural
  2. Lintels above fireplaces or large window openings, purely decorative
  3. Wall panels and cladding where the beam is sawn into planks
  4. Stair handrails, balusters, or finishing details on a staircase
  5. Furniture such as tables, bench frames, or shelving

The technical requirements for these applications are less stringent. That said, it is still advisable to pay attention to moisture content and stability even with non-structural beams, so that the timber does not move or crack in visible areas after installation. Old oak beams are ideally suited to these kinds of applications, precisely because their patina and texture have fully matured.

Can antique reclaimed oak be used as structural timber?

Yes, antique reclaimed oak may be used as structural timber, but only if the material demonstrably meets the applicable standards. In practice, this means the timber must be visually or machine graded and accompanied by the correct documentation. Without an official inspection, reclaimed timber is formally not permitted in a certified structure.

In practice, there are two routes. The first is to have the material graded by an accredited grader, who assigns the timber to a strength class. The second route is to work with a structural engineer who calculates the specific application based on the actual dimensions and an on-site visual assessment. In small-scale or non-permit-required projects, this second route is regularly followed.

Oak that has been air-dried for an extended period has a clear advantage in this regard. Its exceptional stability and low moisture content make the material suitable for demanding structural applications. Air-dried oak beams are therefore supplied to projects where both appearance and load-bearing capacity are required, including large estate projects both at home and abroad.

What dimensions are available for load-bearing oak beams from stock?

The available dimensions for load-bearing oak beams vary considerably depending on stock. In general, beams are available from 10 by 10 centimeters up to more than 30 by 30 centimeters in cross-section, with lengths of up to 10 meters and sometimes beyond. The larger the stock, the greater the chance of finding the required size without custom work.

For structural applications, the combination of cross-section and length is decisive. A structural engineer calculates the required dimensions based on span, load, and strength class. Only after that does it make sense to consult the available stock.

Antique beams are rarely available in standard sizes, as they originate from historic buildings with their own dimensions. This also means you sometimes come across a beam larger than strictly necessary, which is only an advantage structurally. The choice between a new and an antique oak beam depends on the application, the budget, the desired appearance, and the technical requirements of the project. There is no absolute preference. In some situations a new beam is the more logical choice; in others, antique timber offers advantages that new material simply cannot match.

Oak that is decades or even centuries old has a density and stability that freshly sawn timber rarely achieves. Moreover, the material carries a history that new timber simply cannot have.
