Oak and spruce are fundamentally different materials — and this choice has a direct impact on the lifespan, appearance, and application of a project. Oak is heavier, harder, and significantly more durable than spruce, while spruce is lighter, easier to work with, and less expensive when new. Which material is the better choice depends entirely on what you are building, for how long, and what aesthetic you are aiming for. Oak and spruce differ in nearly every technical respect. Oak is a hardwood with high density, a fine grain, and naturally occurring tannins that make the material resistant to moisture, mold, and insects. Spruce is the most widely used wood in modern construction, particularly for concealed load-bearing structures, floor joists, roof sheathing, and walls that will be covered. The material is widely available, affordable, and easy to process, making it the obvious choice for projects where the wood will not remain visible.
Spruce is also frequently used for temporary structures, formwork, and standard residential construction. Where oak takes the long view, spruce is a pragmatic choice for applications where function matters more than character. That does not make it an inferior material — it makes it a different material for different circumstances.
Oak lasts significantly longer than spruce. Under dry, protected conditions, oak can remain intact for hundreds of years. Reclaimed oak in use today proves this literally: beams and boards that are 200 years old are still structurally fully serviceable. Spruce has a shorter lifespan, particularly under varying moisture conditions or when used outdoors without treatment.
The difference lies in the density of the cell structure and the presence of tannins in oak. These compounds inhibit the growth of mold and deter insects. Spruce does not have this natural protection and requires regular treatment or impregnation for outdoor applications in order to extend its lifespan.
For projects where long-term durability is a factor, oak is in most cases the smarter choice — especially for structures that are not easy to replace.
The decision to use reclaimed oak is often a combination of technical and aesthetic considerations. Reclaimed oak offers not only the proven durability of aged material, but also a stability that new wood cannot match: thanks to a long, natural drying period, the wood is fully seasoned and barely susceptible to shrinkage or warping.
Reclaimed oak is the obvious choice when:
New spruce is the obvious choice when the wood will be concealed, the budget is limited, and the construction involves standard dimensions. However, as soon as the material plays a role in the experience of the space, reclaimed oak deserves serious consideration. Air-dried oak beams are a good example of what this means in practice: material with a proven history, optimal stability through a drying period of more than five years, and an appearance that new wood simply cannot replicate.
Oak is more expensive than spruce, and the difference is significant. The higher price reflects the slower growth of oak, its greater density, the higher level of processing involved, and — in the case of reclaimed wood — the rarity and quality of the available material. For reclaimed oak beams and boards, selection, measurement, and logistics also factor into the price.
It is worth considering the price in relation to the overall lifespan of the project. Oak that lasts 150 years represents a very different cost calculation than spruce that may need to be replaced after a few decades. For projects with a long time horizon and high quality standards, the price difference can be readily justified in most cases.
