In addition, the construction of the building from which the wood originates, as well as the method of storage, play a decisive role.
With reclaimed oak, an additional factor comes into play: the integrity of the material after decades or even centuries of use. A beam or board that once served as part of a load-bearing structure in an old barn or farmhouse has already proven what it can carry. However, cracks, notches, or damaged areas can limit the usable length.

Wind-dried oak dries slowly and naturally, outdoors or in a well-ventilated space, over a period of several years. Kiln-dried wood is heated in a drying oven to reduce its moisture content in a short period of time. The end result may appear comparable, but the behavior of the wood differs fundamentally.
Oak that has been wind-dried develops a stable cell structure through this slow drying process. Internal stresses gradually dissipate. This makes wind-dried oak particularly suitable for structural applications where long-term dimensional stability is required — whether in beams, boards, or roof boarding.

As a rule of thumb, oak requires approximately one year per centimeter of thickness to become wind-dry. A beam 20 centimeters thick will therefore quickly need two years or more. For heavy structural beams with cross-sections of 25 by 25 centimeters or larger, the drying time extends to five years and sometimes longer. For boards and thinner material the process is faster, but the same principle applies: rushing leads to inferior quality.
