The difference between air-dried and kiln-dried oak lies in the method and pace of drying. Air-dried oak dries slowly and naturally in open air over a period of several years. Kiln-dried wood is force-dried in a drying oven within a matter of weeks or days to reach a low moisture content.

Which method is most suitable depends on the application and the requirements of the project. Both methods have their own characteristics:

  1. Air-dried oak retains its natural structure and color. The cell walls have had time to adapt gradually, resulting in less internal stress. This makes the material more stable in the long term in most cases — particularly with large cross-sections.
  2. Kiln-dried oak has a measurably lower moisture content, often below eight percent. This is useful when the wood is applied directly in a heated, dry environment, such as for flooring or interior doors. However, the drying process is intensive and can lead to more surface checking or color change.
