Project developers choose air-dried oak because the material offers a stability that kiln-dried timber rarely achieves. The slow, natural drying process over several years allows internal stresses in the wood to dissipate gradually, meaning it barely moves or cracks after processing. For projects where dimensional accuracy, durability, and appearance must all come together, air-dried oak is in most cases the obvious choice.

What makes air-dried oak more stable than kiln-dried timber?

Air-dried oak is more stable than kiln-dried timber because the drying process is slow and even — without the heat and pressure used in a drying kiln. This gentle drying gives the wood’s cell structure time to adjust, allowing internal stresses to be almost entirely eliminated. The result is a material that barely moves after installation.

With kiln drying, timber is brought to the desired moisture content in a relatively short period of time. This is efficient, but the outer surface dries faster than the core. That tension remains locked in the wood and can later manifest as cracking, warping, or distortion — particularly in large cross-sections. With oak sections larger than 20 by 20 centimeters, this risk is considerable.

Air-dried oak with a natural drying time of five years or more has left those stresses entirely behind. The air-dried oak beams we hold in our yard were stored years ago and have been drying in the open air ever since. This also gives the material its characteristic patina: a grey-brown tone that cannot be replicated.

How long does the air-drying process take for oak?

As a rule of thumb, oak requires approximately one year of air drying per centimeter of thickness. A piece 20 centimeters thick therefore needs at least twenty years, with the exact drying time depending on storage conditions, the origin of the timber, and the season in which it was cut.

This makes air-dried oak a material that cannot be rushed into production. It requires patience and space — and that is precisely why a large, well-managed stock is so valuable. Timber that has already been drying in a yard for years is immediately ready to use when a project calls for it, with no need to wait on a drying process.

Oak that is more than a hundred years old has also spent decades standing under varying conditions. That experience is embedded in the material. It has weathered dry summers and wet winters, and as a result has become exceptionally stable.

For standard structural applications that will be fully concealed, kiln-dried timber may suffice. However, as soon as the timber remains visible, involves large dimensions, or forms part of a project with high quality requirements, air-dried oak is in most cases the more sensible choice.

What is the difference between air-dried oak and antique oak?

Air-dried oak and antique oak are related terms, but they are not the same thing. Air-dried oak refers to the drying method: the timber has been dried naturally in the open air over an extended period of time. Antique oak refers to age and origin: it is timber that has already served a previous purpose — in a building, a ship, or another structure.

In practice, the distinction can be summarized as follows:

Oak that is a hundred years old or more typically has a density and structure that younger timber simply does not possess. The growth rings are closer together, the wood is heavier and harder, and the color is deeper. That is what many architects and project developers are looking for when they choose antique oak beams: not just the appearance, but the physical properties that only time can impart.
