Air-dried oak is more stable than kiln-dried timber because the drying process is slow and even — without the heat and pressure used in a drying kiln. This gentle drying gives the wood’s cell structure time to adjust, allowing internal stresses to be almost entirely eliminated. The result is a material that barely moves after installation.
With kiln drying, timber is brought to the desired moisture content in a relatively short period of time. This is efficient, but the outer surface dries faster than the core. That tension remains locked in the wood and can later manifest as cracking, warping, or distortion — particularly in large cross-sections. With oak sections larger than 20 by 20 centimeters, this risk is considerable.
Air-dried oak with a natural drying time of five years or more has left those stresses entirely behind. The air-dried oak beams we hold in our yard were stored years ago and have been drying in the open air ever since. This also gives the material its characteristic patina: a grey-brown tone that cannot be replicated.
As a rule of thumb, oak requires approximately one year of air drying per centimeter of thickness. A piece 20 centimeters thick therefore needs at least twenty years, with the exact drying time depending on storage conditions, the origin of the timber, and the season in which it was cut.
This makes air-dried oak a material that cannot be rushed into production. It requires patience and space — and that is precisely why a large, well-managed stock is so valuable. Timber that has already been drying in a yard for years is immediately ready to use when a project calls for it, with no need to wait on a drying process.
Oak that is more than a hundred years old has also spent decades standing under varying conditions. That experience is embedded in the material. It has weathered dry summers and wet winters, and as a result has become exceptionally stable.
