Wood / Air dried oak beams / Oak Beam 10×10 Cm
Dry, French oak beams suitable for construction and structural timber
Our wind-dried oak beams are also available in smaller sizes, such as the oak beam 10×10 cm (100×100 mm). In the timber construction world, these beams are often called child beams. Child beams are traditionally used in load-bearing structures, where they lie perpendicular to the larger and heavier mother beams and support the floor structure. Besides their functional role in construction, these beams can also serve excellently as decorative beams, table legs, or for other furniture projects.
Oak beams with a cross-section of 10×10 cm are also often referred to as 100×100 mm. These smaller beams are frequently used for both structural applications, such as support beams in wooden buildings, and for decorative purposes, for example in interior design or garden structures.
The dry oak wood has several important advantages. Fresh oak initially contains 30 to 50% moisture, which can cause deformation in a project. Unlike fresh wood, wind-dried oak undergoes a drying process of at least five to ten years, resulting in more stable wood and also with lower weight. It is less susceptible to warping and cracking, and offers better protection against insects and fungi.
The price of a 10×10 cm oak beam largely depends on how many years the wood has been dried. The longer the wood has dried, the higher the quality and therefore the price level. Secondly, the length is important – the longer the beam, the scarcer and thus more expensive.
A wind-dried oak beam is generally more expensive than freshly sawn oak. Despite a higher price level than fresh oak, the advantages can justify the investment for those who prioritize quality or aesthetics.
