Wood / Air dried oak beams / Oak Beam 12×12 Cm
Dry, French oak beams suitable as building and construction timber
An oak beam 12×12 cm or 120×120 mm comes from an impressive oak tree. Such a tree requires approximately 100 years of growth. Such beams are available in our assortment and are
Our wind-dried oak beams are also available in smaller sizes, such as the 12×12 cm (120×120 mm) beams. In the timber construction world, these beams are often called secondary beams. Secondary beams are traditionally used in load-bearing structures, where they lie perpendicular to the larger and heavier main beams and support the floor. Besides their functional role in constructions, these beams can also serve excellently as decorative beams, table legs, or for other furniture projects.
The beams can be brushed or planed as desired.
Generally, the rule of thumb is to allow 5 cm for the cross-section depth per linear meter of span. Following this guideline, a 12×12 cm oak beam would be sufficiently strong for a span of 2 to 2.5 meters. Always have a structural engineer calculate the precise required dimensions.
The weight of an oak beam varies and after several years of drying process, is usually between 750 and 850 kg per cubic meter. The volumetric mass of the oak wood is primarily influenced by the moisture percentage. The longer a beam dries, the lower the moisture content in the wood. A dry oak beam therefore always weighs less than a freshly sawn oak beam, which can weigh more than 1000 kg per cubic meter.
Secondly, the density of a beam depends on its growth region; a beam with fine grains can be heavier than one sawn from a faster-growing tree.
A 12×12 cm oak beam weighs approximately 10 to 12 kg per linear meter.
Oak beams with a cross-section of 12×12 cm (120×120 mm) are very suitable for various applications, such as smaller canopies, pergolas, verandas, and fences. They are often used for the construction of light outbuildings or as decorative elements in landscape architecture.
Wind-dried oak is more stable than fresh wood, making it less prone to warping or cracking. This makes the 12×12 cm beams ideal for projects where durability and aesthetics are important, such as in outdoor spaces and long-lasting timber constructions.
The 12×12 cm* (120×120 mm) oak beam is sawn from French oak and wind-dried for a period of 4 to 8 years. This drying process ensures stability and minimizes deformation. These smaller beams are often used for both structural applications, such as support beams in timber buildings, and for decorative purposes, for example in interior design or garden constructions. The price and availability of these beams may vary depending on length, drying time, and specific finish.
A wind-dried oak beam is generally more expensive than freshly sawn oak. Despite a higher price level than fresh oak, the advantages can justify the investment for those who prioritize quality or aesthetics.
