Wood / Air dried oak beams / Oak Beam 18×18 Cm
Dry, French oak beams suitable for construction and structural timber
An oak beam 18×18 cm or 180×180 mm comes from an imposing oak tree. Such a tree requires approximately 150 years of growth time. Such beams are available in our range and are approximately 5 to 7 years air dried. The wood has a beautiful, straight grain, making it excellently suited for use as a structural beam in renovation projects or when building new homes.
An oak beam of 18×18 cm contains 20% less oak wood volume compared to an oak beam 20×20 cm and is therefore 20% more affordable in price.
Our oak beams with a cross-section of 18×18 cm offer unparalleled strength and durability for a wide range of construction projects. Thanks to the robust format and natural properties of oak wood, these beams are ideal for applications where stability and long lifespan are essential, such as structural elements in homes, barns, verandas and wooden outbuildings.
The beams can be brushed or planed as desired.
Generally, the rule of thumb is that you can count 5 cm for the height of the cross-section per meter of span. With this guideline, an oak beam of 18×18 cm would be sufficiently strong for a span of 4 meters. Always have a structural engineer calculate the exact required dimensions.
The weight of an oak beam varies and after several years of drying process, is usually between 750 and 850 kg per cubic meter. The volumetric mass of the oak wood is primarily influenced by the moisture percentage. The longer a beam dries, the lower the moisture content in the wood. A dry oak beam therefore always weighs less than a freshly sawn oak beam, which can weigh more than 1000 kg per cubic meter.
Secondly, the density of a beam depends on the growth area; a beam with fine grain can be heavier than a beam cut from a tree that grew faster. Here are some weight indications:
18×18 cm / approximately 22 to 27 kg per running meter
20×20 cm / approximately 30 to 35 kg per running meter
The oak beams with a cross-section of 18×18 cm are also often referred to as 180×180 mm. Such dimensions are suitable for various construction applications, including oak verandas, outbuildings, canopies or pergolas.
The dry oak wood has several important advantages. Fresh oak initially contains 30 to 50% moisture, which can cause deformation in a project. Unlike fresh wood, wind-dried oak undergoes a drying process of at least five to ten years, resulting in more stable wood and also with lower weight. It is less susceptible to warping and cracking, and offers better protection against insects and fungi.
The price of an oak beam of 18×18 cm is highly dependent on the number of years the wood has been dried. The longer the wood has been dried, the higher the quality and thus the price level. Secondly, length is important – the longer the beam, the scarcer and thus more expensive.
A wind-dried oak beam is generally more expensive than freshly sawn oak. Despite a higher price level than fresh oak, the advantages can justify the investment for those who prioritize quality or aesthetics.
