Wood / Air dried oak beams / Oak Beam 25×25 Cm
Impressive French oak beams suitable for construction and structural timber
An oak beam 25×25 cm or 250×250 mm comes from an impressive oak tree. Such a tree requires about 150 to 175 years of growth time. These beams are available in our assortment and have been
A common dimension for an oak beam is approximately 25×25 centimeters, intended for large constructions. This size is suitable for various applications, such as support beams, timber structures, or decorative beams. The beams are available in various lengths, ranging from oak posts of 2.5 or 3 meters to long oak beams of 6 meters, 7 meters, 8 meters, 9 meters, or even 10 meters.
The beams can be brushed or planed as desired.
Generally, the rule of thumb is that you need 5 cm in height of the cross-section per meter of span. Following this guideline, an oak beam of 30×30 cm would be strong enough for a span of 6 meters. Always have a structural engineer calculate the exact required dimensions.
An alternative to the standard 30×30 cm dimension is the 25×25 cm beam. Such a beam contains 30% less wood and is therefore approximately 30% lower in price.
The weight of an oak beam varies and after several years of drying process, is usually between 750 and 850 kg per cubic meter. The volumetric mass of the oak wood is primarily influenced by the moisture percentage. The longer a beam dries, the lower the moisture content in the wood. A dry oak beam therefore always weighs less than a freshly sawn oak beam, which can weigh more than 1000 kg per cubic meter.
Secondly, the density of a beam depends on the growth area; a beam with fine grain can be heavier than a beam cut from a tree that grew faster. Here are some weight indications:
25×25 cm / approximately 48 to 55 kg per linear meter
The dry oak wood has several important advantages. Fresh oak initially contains 30 to 50% moisture, which can cause deformation in a project. Unlike fresh wood, wind-dried oak undergoes a drying process of at least five to ten years, resulting in more stable wood and also with lower weight. It is less susceptible to warping and cracking, and offers better protection against insects and fungi.
The price of a 25×25 cm oak beam strongly depends on the number of years the wood has been dried. The longer the wood has dried, the higher the quality and thus the price level. Secondly, the length is important, the longer the beam, the scarcer and therefore more expensive.
A wind-dried oak beam is generally more expensive than freshly sawn oak. Despite a higher price level than fresh oak, the advantages can justify the investment for those who prioritize quality or aesthetics.
