Reclaimed oak wagon boards planed

Those looking for used wood with a sleek look soon end up with planed old oak wagon boards.
With planing, the rough sides of the boards are smoothed.
Because a planing depth of only a few millimeters is maintained, the specific characteristics are retained.
The result is a lively plank in which the dark grooves form a brilliant contrast to the characteristic oak wood grain.

What are wagon boards?

Oak wagon planks come from freight cars.
The planks have been used for years as floorboards.
A wooden floor in a wagon has several advantages: it is hard-wearing, not too heavy and the cargo will not slide along the way.
When freight cars are scrapped, the old wagon planks are also released.

How can the wagon boards be identified?

A wagon plank is immediately recognizable by the bolt holes.
The boards have been attached to the freight wagon with iron bolts.
Oak wagon boards also have a lived-in surface.
This is the result of years of transporting various goods such as coal, scrap iron or gravel.
Furthermore, a wagon plank is usually 270 cm long, which is equal to the width of such a train car.

Reclaimed oak wall shelf

Planed oak wagon planks can be used well as a shelf on the wall.
Such a wall shelf of old wood immediately gives atmosphere to an interior.
It is possible to fix the wagon boards blind to the wall.
Make sure that the long side that meets the wall is sawn at right angles.
We can perform this sawing operation in our own sawmill.
After this, holes of 12 mm can be drilled at right angles into the board.
Make sure to also drill 12 mm holes in the wall.
Iron wire ends of 12 mm are available at the local hardware store.
Glue the wire end into the wall and the wagon board can be placed on it.

Wagon boards in interior construction

The wood is also suitable in interior construction.
Thus it is possible to use the planks for an oak kitchen, wall covering, (built-in) cabinets or sliding door.
In short, the applications are numerous.

What does the wood look like after planing?

A planing operation shaves several millimeters off the board.
The result: the light, beige color of the oak emerges, along with characteristic black streaks from the grooves.
We can perform this planing, although it is also possible to do it yourself.
Make sure the boards are free of old nails and tacks before planing.

Should I treat the wagon boards?

You can, but you don’t have to.
If the wood is not treated, water rings can form when it comes in contact with water.
In that case, water-soluble wood substances come to the surface.
Over time, the water rings and grease stains form an aged appearance; the boards will darken a bit.
A second option is to treat the wood with an ultra matte lacquer.
This way the wood is protected and can be easily cleaned with a cloth.
Always try a treatment on a test piece first to see if it produces the desired results.

What are the prices of planed wagon boards?

Prices are on request and depend on a number of factors.
For example, the width of a plank is a determining factor.
A wide wagon board is pricier than a narrow board.
The number of boards needed also plays a role.
