Wood / Reclaimed wood planks / Live edge oak planks
Live edge oak planks are relatively wide and available in long lengths.
The wood can be used for such things as a log table, wall shelf, window sill, bathroom cabinet or as siding.
In oak log planks, also called live edge oak planks or bark planks, only the top and bottom sides have had sawing treatments.
On the other sides, the bark can still be seen; the natural edge of the trunk.
The width of the trunk determines the width of the plank.
The wood can be used to manufacture, for example, an oak log table: a robust, wooden dining table with a whimsical, natural edge.
The wood can also be used to make a TV cabinet, bathroom cabinet or window sill.
The log planks have dried outside for up to 15 years, giving them an aged character.
The bark of an oak log often contains grains of sand or small stones.
When such a log is cut, the large saw at a sawmill can become very blunt.
For this reason, oak logs today are felled before they are cut: large machines remove the bark from the log.
The old-fashioned sawing method (sawing with bark and all) is also called “authentic sawing.
Much of the log boards in stock are sawn this way.
Because of this, the original shape of the tree is still clearly visible.
The planks come from the French Loire region and the French Ardennes, among others.
The old wood has acquired a characteristic graying over the years.
Yes, the oak logs are dry.
The wood has been wind-dried over a period of at least 8 to 15 years.
This particularly long drying period makes the wood suitable for immediate use in interior projects.
Time ensures quality.
The timber yard also has batches of logs over 20 years old from the period just after the French tree storm.
In December 1999, very heavy storms ravaged France.
Two thirds of the country was declared a disaster area.
The forests were also badly damaged and many oak trees fell down.
There was an oversupply on the French oak market and some logs were not sold until years later.
In addition to the huge stock of oak planks, a number of Lebanon cedar logs are available.
This is an extremely rare species of wood.
The tree traditionally grows in the area to the east of the Mediterranean Sea.
The ancient Egyptians imported this wood thousands of years ago for shipbuilding.
The log sections that are available have a width of up to 120 cm and are good to use as a log table top.
For cladding a facade or wall in an exterior application, oak trunks or shell panels are a common choice.
It gives the surface a robust and tough look.
For this application, choose a thin plank of about 1.5 cm or 2 cm thickness.
The most common application: the oak trunk table.
For more information: ‘oak trunk table’.
A tree trunk shelf is ideally suited as a robust oak wall shelf.
It is precisely the whimsical side of the old plank that is visible when attached to the wall.
At least a thickness of 4 cm is required to fix the wall shelf blind.
Oak planks are suitable as window sills.
The wood is available in multiple thicknesses and long lengths.
If a tough, robust look is desired, a window sill made of such old wood is a good choice.
Reclaimed oak log planks are relatively wide.
This makes it possible to realize an oak TV cabinet from a single plank.
In the sawmill, it is possible to “straight saw” such a wide plank on one long side, making the plank fit seamlessly against the wall.
For a bathroom cabinet made of old oak log planks, choose thicker tops such as 5 cm, 6 cm or 7 cm.
This gives the oak furniture a tough look.
The whimsical shape of the tree is still clearly visible at the edge of the top.
Tip: treat the furniture with an ultra-matte lacquer to allow it to come into contact with water without problems.
The outer layer of dust and dirt is removed in a brushing operation; the old wood comes back to life.
A brushed oak log plank has a more robust appearance, and is generally a bit darker in color.
Such a brushing treatment is carried out by us before the boards are displayed in the shed.
This way, an oak tree-trunk board can be taken home immediately.
A planed oak log board is smooth and the wood grain comes out beautifully.
The original light, oak color is visible again.
A smooth surface has a number of advantages.
For example, it is easier to handle the wood and it is easy to clean.
The prices of the wood depend mainly on the size.
A wide or long plank is scarce and as a result the price is higher.
The wood volume of a thick board is greater than a thin board, making thicker boards pricier.
Request a quote that includes the desired dimensions of the plank (thickness, width, length) and we will provide an appropriate quote.
The lumber yard also has a crate containing short pieces of log planks.
These planks have a length of about 1 meter and are competitively priced.
The boards are available in various thicknesses from 2 to 10 cm.
Different wood projects require different thicknesses.
For an oak log table with a length of, say, 2 meters, a thickness of 3 or 4 cm is appropriate.
A longer log table requires a thicker board of, say, 5 or 6 cm thickness.
For an oak windowsill, a thickness of 2 or 3 cm is often the best choice.
The tree trunk planks are sorted by thickness: 2 cm, 3 cm, 4 cm, 5 cm, 6 cm, 8 cm and 10 cm.
Most of the tree trunk planks or log sections are approximately 30 cm, 40 cm or 50 cm wide.
There are also some larger log planks available that are 80 cm, 90 cm or 100 cm wide.
Thus, a furniture maker can make a one-piece trunk table out of it.

The lengths available range from 2 meters to 8 meters.
The long log sections of 6 meters, 7 meters or 8 meters were cut from large logs at the time; these boards are mostly 6 cm or thicker.
Some projects require a long length.
Consider a long oak window sill.
There are several old oak planks that have lengths of 3 meters, 4 meters or 5 meters.
