Oak cladding
What is oak cladding?
Oak cladding consists of oak planks mounted on the facade of a building. Wood cladding has several important advantages: it is insulating, has a long lifespan and also has a beautiful weathered patina over time.
Various types of oak cladding boards available
Several batches of oak siding boards are available at the lumberyard, each with a different look and feel. In addition, siding boards are available in a variety of sizes.
Oak for outdoor use, is it possible?
Yes indeed, oak can be used very well for outdoor applications. The wood will naturally gray due to natural weathering such as rain and sunshine. The (south) west facade has the most to endure in terms of rainfall in the Netherlands, so this wood will age more quickly than facades oriented to the other wind directions. Oak is classified in durability class 2; in other words, strong and durable.
Vertical or horizontal placement of oak gable boards?
It is possible to place the oak cladding boards both vertically and horizontally on the facade, depending on the architect’s design. Gable boards can be installed using slats mounted to the gable. Keep a gap of several millimeters to give the boards room to adjust to the humidity. With vertical placement, the widths can be interchanged, which gives the facade a playful and lively character. Highly recommended!
Is it necessary to treat oak cladding?
No, that’s not necessary. Without treatment, the wood will naturally gray. If this is not desired, the wood can be treated with an oil, varnish or stain. Get good advice on this from a specialist store or, of course, from us!
