Large, uniform batches of old wooden purlins are stored in Doorwerth. The old purlins are suitable for beam ceilings and in interior architecture.
Questions about Old purlins?
Whatsapp usWooden purlins support the roof of a building; a purlin is the horizontal support beam in the longitudinal direction of the roof. Purlins can also come from a wood floor and in this case are also called child beams. An old purlin is often unequal such as 8×15 cm, 8×20 cm or 10×20 cm. When dilapidated buildings are demolished, or a roof structure is in need of renovation, the old purlins are released. The wood can be reused in construction and interior design.
Most purlins in the Netherlands are pine. A smaller portion is larch or French pine. Very occasionally a demolition releases old oak purlins. Rare and therefore special!
There are old buildings in France that were built with oak construction. The old oak purlins are being carefully removed from the building. After arriving in Doorwerth, the oak purlin beams are stripped of the old nails.
The wood type of most released purlins in the Netherlands is softwood. The wood remains fairly stable, making it available in long lengths. Our collection includes several large, uniform lots of old softwood purlins.
The old wooden purlins can be reused in a roof structure. Always contact a structural engineer when load bearing capacity is a requirement for the purlins.
In addition to an inclined application, the purlins can also be placed horizontally. Together with the heavy joists, the old purlins in a beam layer give a room a particularly beautiful and cozy character.
The wood can be recovered as desired by brush treatment. Sometimes it is also necessary to remove the old, hand-forged nails from the purlins. We can perform these operations if required.

A rule of thumb for structural engineers is to count 5 cm for every meter of span. According to this rule, a span of 4 meters requires a purlin with a head size of 8 x 20 cm or 10 x 20 cm.
Our purlins have different head sizes. For example, lots are available with head sizes of 8x15cm, 8x17cm, 8x20cm or 10x20cm. There is also a batch of antique oak purlin beams in the collection of 12×18 cm with lengths up to 4 meters.

Old oak purlins often have a length of 2 meters, 3 meters or 4 meters. Old softwood purlins have longer lengths of up to 9 meters. Please feel free to contact us for more information on available lengths.
The spacing between purlins is usually between 110 and 150 cm, depending on the structure, the strength of the wood of the purlins, the weight of the roof and the architect’s design. The stronger the wood species, the smaller the required distance between purlins. Interesting fact: in the 17th and 18th centuries, the number of purlins or child beams showed how wealthy someone was; a symbol of wealth, in other words. The smaller the distance between bars, the higher the status and affluence of the client.
