North Holland, Netherlands
An extraordinary and eye-catching project that we enjoyed working on takes place in the North Holland region, a few car minutes from the beach, on a beautiful plot of land where the client’s long-awaited dream home is rising. The plan initially included the construction of an oak outbuilding where the client could stay during the construction of the main building. After an extensive construction period, this so-called guesthouse is now complete, made entirely of old oak. From the structural beams to the kitchen, and from the beds to the roof beams, everything is made from this historic building material.
Only photos of the interior of this project are available due to client privacy, with a special focus on the wooden structures. The guest house consists of two floors, with a spacious living room with an open kitchen on the first floor. By placing the building almost half a meter lower than the garden, one enjoys a beautiful view of the greenery and the space feels intimate and cozy. From the living room, stairs lead upstairs to the master bedroom with private bathroom. The beds are placed under the oak roof, which creates a particularly warm and cozy atmosphere partly because of the old oak roof boarding.
All structures are handcrafted, using various old oak beams, some as thick as 35×35 cm. A striking element in the living room on the first floor is an imposing beam, which acts as an eye-catcher. Also, the angled angled connections between two structural horizontal beams were deliberately left visible, adding an interesting detail to the design.
This project was special for us and had some challenges. For example, for the exterior structure, there was a specific desire for an old oak plank 40 cm wide, 10 cm thick and 7 meters long. Finding such a unique piece of wood took some time, but after several months we managed to obtain it, which allowed the completion of the relevant part of the project.
